Canada Immigration Minister: Marco Mendicino, in his first speech after his appointment as Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship laid out the government’s vision for the immigration system. This is his second mandate in October as a Liberal.
In the long-standing tradition called the ‘vision’ speech, the Immigration Minister outlined the government’s aspiration/ goals, and the formulation of strategies through policies and immigration programs, to help achieve the stated goal.
Mendicino commenced his speech emphasizing the need for dialogue on how many immigrants Canada needs to secure its economic prosperity. Dialogue in this view is absolutely necessary considering the demographic realities of Canada. There is no proportion to the aging population and the low birth rate. Hence, there are not enough workers to carry out the government’s initiatives for its population.
In this venture, immigrants play a crucial part. Approximately 80% of Canada’s population growth will be filled by immigrants in the current situation. By 2030s the prevailing trend suggests 100% reach.
The Immigration Minister, as a consequence, stated that the federal government of Canada has aimed to welcome over 1 million immigrants over the next 3 years. The Governments’ 2020-2022 Immigration Levels Plan to be tabled in the month of March.
The Express Entry Program since its introduction in 2015 will be Canada’s flagship immigration program with its remarkable success. Three major economic skilled immigration programs, namely the Federal Skilled Worker Program ( FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC) to manage the Candidates’ profiles. The report by Mendicino stated that about 95% of newcomers through express entry have jobs, and around 80% are working in their field.
Two other programs, apart from Express Entry Program, have aided to Canada’s Economy namely:
- Atlantic Immigration Pilot
- Global Talent Stream
Realizing the need to promote immigration to smaller communities across the country for economic benefits, the government in 2019 launched the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot. Municipal Nominee Program (MNP) is another initiative for the economic assistance of the country.
Marco Mendicino urged the attendees to support immigration for the positive impact on the country. Furthermore, he stated that the immigration system of Canada is lauded by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for its international standard, and its effectiveness in managing the immigration system.
In conclusion to his ‘vision’ speech, Mendicino stated that Canada is built on the strength of immigration. With new immigrants, the labor market will grow, support business, and envisioned that “Canada remains the best country in the world.”
